Nadine Breast Cancer Survivor

Working as a nurse at the Saint Thomas Hospital cancer unit, Nadine Walls understands better than most that cancer can happen to anyone. She sees cases of it every day. But, says Nadine, who was just 30 when her physician discovered a lump during a routine physical exam, it was hard to believe that it was really happening to her.

"We all tend to think that cancer happens to other people," said Nadine. "As a nurse working in oncology, I knew the warning signs, I knew that it could happen at any age, but it still came as a shock when my doctor told me I had breast cancer."

Nadine's cancer started as a tiny blemish that itched. She realizes now that it should have raised a warning flag for her, but by the time she went in for a routine physical, the blemish had turned into a knot. Her physician scheduled her for a mammogram and, soon after, surgery followed by six months of chemotherapy. Today, celebrating 21 years cancer free, Nadine uses her experience to give hope to others facing a similar situation.

"I've been on both sides and I know what a terrifying experience it can be," says Nadine. "No matter what type of cancer the patient has, when they hear my story and see that my hair has come back and that I'm working and living life to the fullest – that there is a light at the end of the tunnel – it gives them hope."

Today Nadine is a strong advocate for routine checkups. She stresses the importance of prevention through diet, exercise and lifestyle. She is passionate about the difference that early detection can make. Nadine is also quick to remind people that cancer doesn't care what age you are. Man or woman, young or old, Nadine shares her story with anyone who will listen and encourages all to see their physicians for annual checkups and regular mammograms.

"God left me here for a reason," says Nadine. "I love my life. I love walking and traveling and playing tennis and I thank God every day for being able to use my experience to help others."
